The day dawned
bright and sunny, a total change from last year when it rained all day.
There were 9 entries in the Novice Class and 6 in the Open class.
The day started
with each competitor doing a dressage test depending on their class.
This was immediately followed by a cones course. Each competitor was
given 3 minutes to complete the 15 cones and then try to score as many
points in the time remaining by driving through as many cones as
possible, for example cone gate #1 scored 1 point, cone gate #15 scored
15points. You could drive the same cone as many times as possible, but
if you knocked a ball off, that gate was then closed and scored zero.
At the end of the
dressage section Kelly Burton was leading the Novice class with 48
penalties from Sue Lawson on 62 penalties. In the Open class Frances
Norgrove was leading with 65 penalties from Duncan Seth-Smith on 88. One
or two competitors made errors and suffered accordingly but this was the
first event of the season.
The Cones course
was full of excitement , Kelly Wilson threw down a challenge with a
total of 29 penalties, Kelly Burton responded but could only reply with
35 penalties after having two balls down, but a great try in her first
Poacher event. The Open class saw Duncan Seth-Smith storm around the
standard course with 1 ball down and then go onto to score the best of
the day 81 which converted to just 24 penalties, followed by Angie Smith
with 40 penalties and Frances Norgrove on 43.
After a short
Lunch break the Novice class started a mini marathon with 4 obstacles.
Fastest in Obstacle 1 was Kelly Wilson, with Kelly Burton taking
obstacle 2 from Christine Lyte. Obstacle 3 & 4 were again won by Kelly
Wilson. In the Open class Frances Norgrove and Duncan Seth-Smith were
equal at 37 seconds, Duncan took Obstacle 2 with Frances Norgrove taking
obstacles 3 & 4 .
Many thanks to the
army of Stewards and to Ben & Jane Smith for letting us use their venue.
The day was a
great opener to the 2008 competition season, and the weather appears to
have turned to summer, but for how long. |
